Leave delivery complaints visible - they build authenticity
Negative reviews about delivery, packaging, or courier issues are largely disregarded by product-focused shoppers. Removing them makes your review section look curated, which harms trust more than the reviews themselves.
Why Not All Negative Reviews Are Equal
Negativity bias research by Skowronski and Carlston shows that negative information generally has greater weight in overall impression formation than positive information of equal magnitude. However, this effect applies specifically when the negative information is diagnostic - relevant to the core evaluation.
A review saying "the material looks cheap in person" is diagnostic for a shopper evaluating material quality. A review saying "arrived three days late" is not diagnostic for product quality. Shoppers intuitively understand that delivery is handled by a courier, not the product itself. They read the complaint, note it, and move on.
The Authenticity Dividend
A review section that contains only 4- and 5-star reviews looks filtered. Modern shoppers - particularly those who read reviews carefully before a first purchase - are acutely aware of what natural review distributions look like. An implausibly positive distribution raises the suspicion that negative reviews have been removed, which damages trust more than the negative reviews would have.
Research from Baymard Institute and similar UX studies consistently shows that a mix of ratings, including some 1 and 2-star reviews, increases the perceived credibility of the positive reviews.
The Correct Action on Logistical Complaints
Rather than deleting logistical complaints, respond to them publicly. Acknowledge the issue, explain what was done to resolve it, and briefly note that the issue was with the courier rather than the product. This demonstrates responsiveness and positions the complaint as an exception rather than a pattern.
