Why the Unit of Measurement Shapes Perceived Value

When the same quantity is expressed in a smaller unit, it appears larger. "250mg" feels like more than "0.25g" - they are identical, but the larger number creates a stronger impression of potency and precision. This is a well-documented numerosity effect: larger numbers, regardless of unit, register as "more."

For health and wellness products - supplements, skincare actives, functional foods - perceived potency is a primary purchase driver. A customer choosing between two protein powders or vitamin supplements will use the numbers as proxies for effectiveness. Presenting your formulation in the unit that produces the most compelling number is a legitimate and accurate communication choice.

The Precision Signal

Review your product pages for any ingredient or dosage quantities expressed in grams, litres, or percentages. Where a smaller unit (milligrams, millilitres, micrograms) would present the same quantity as a larger, more impressive number without misrepresentation, make the switch. Always ensure accuracy - the goal is honest framing, not exaggeration.
